Brand voice is a thing you ratify.
Brand voice is a thing you ratify, not a thing you write. Voice documents do not change how anyone writes.
Most companies produce a voice document early in the brand process. Adjective lists. Tone gradients. Sample sentences. The document gets distributed. Six months later, the writing on the website, the social posts, and the sales emails does not sound like the document. The document is not wrong. It is also not in use.
The reason is structural. Voice is encoded in patterns of sentence rhythm, vocabulary range, and what the brand refuses to say. None of those patterns can be specified in advance. They can only be ratified after the fact, by reading what the brand has already written and asking whether it sounds right.
The companies whose voice actually compounds run a different process. They produce work first. Twenty pieces of writing across the surfaces that matter. Web pages, sales emails, social, customer service replies, product copy. The team reads them in a single sitting. The patterns surface. The ratification document gets written from the patterns, not from a workshop.
The document is shorter than most voice documents. Five sentences about rhythm. A short list of words and phrases the brand uses and a shorter list of words and phrases the brand refuses. A handful of structural rules. The document is reference material. The actual voice lives in the twenty pieces.
The reason this version works is that the patterns are already real. The team is not being asked to write in a voice that does not exist yet. They are being asked to match a voice that has already been demonstrated. The cognitive load is different. The output stabilizes within a few weeks.
The other reason is that voice is read, not written. A reader recognizes a brand’s voice in three sentences. The recognition runs on patterns the reader’s brain detects without conscious attention. Patterns cannot be authored at the conscious level. They emerge from many sentences written under similar constraints. A voice document specified in advance does not produce that pattern. A voice ratified from real writing does.
Stop writing voice documents first.
Write twenty things.
Read them together.
The voice will tell you what it is.
